   January 2010

23rd January Adoption event

As of January 2010, CARA has resumed its partnership with Hobbes & Landes at Bonifacio High St. to set up monthly adoption booths for our beautiful rescue cats. Last year we had some very successful adoptions at this venue till the rains came. Unfortunately this is not an ideal venue during the rainy season.
On Saturday the 23rd of January we held an adoption event from 4-9pm. Though the crowd was less in the beginning it soon picked up as the sun set and it became cooler. We had 13 cats adopted that day.

Animals For Asia (AFA) Conference, Singapore Jan 15 - 19, 2010

Gia Robertson (Fundraising Head, CARA) and Nancy Cu Unjieng (President, CARA) attended the Animals for Asia Conference (AFA) in Singapore from Jan 15-19. The main sponsor in Singapore were Louis Ng and Amy Corrigan of ACRES. It was held at the Furama Riverfront Hotel with 391 participants from all over the world. Some of the other co-sponsors were Animals Asia, Animal People, Best Friends, HSI, International Animal Rescue, IFAW, SPCA HK and WSPA

There were 13 representatives from the Philippines from AKF, CARA, PAWAI, PAWS and 5 provincial vets. Two more vets arrived later to attend the WSPA Disaster Seminar held at the ACRES Shelter

                              ACRES Wildlife Shelter

The conference lasted for 4 days and culminated on the 5th day with a tour of the Wetlands, Botanical Garden, ACRES Wildlife Shelter and the Singapore SPCA. Nancy stayed on for the 1st day of a 2-day Seminar on Disaster Management - Rescue and Evacuation which was sponsored by Ian Dacre of WSPA

The conference covered sessions on improving Animal Welfare by education, veterinary care, campaigns, advertising and volunteers. It was a good experience to meet dedicated animal lovers from so many countries. The next AFA conference will be held in June 2011 in Chengdu, China sponsored by Jill Robinson of Animals Asia

The Asia for Animals (AFA) Conference, the largest, most representative Asian animal protection conference, passed the following resolutions for Philippines at the AFA Conference in Singapore (more than 390 delegates from 26 countries, representing more than 200 organisations), on 18th January 2010.

Call for the Government of Philippines to:
  • End the dog meat trade.
  • Work closely with animal protection NGOs to improve enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act, which prohibits dog and horse fighting.
  • End the exploitation of animals in zoos. Ensure all animals in zoos and other captive animal facilities are provided conditions that meet their species specific needs.
  • End the exploitation of animals in the tourism industry.
  • End the trade in wildlife.
  • Integrate humane education into the national education system.
  • Make spay neuter programs for companion animals, a government policy.
  • Make government pounds animal welfare friendly.
  • Ensure that humane slaughter policies for food animals are strictly followed.
  • Not allow greyhound racing to take place in the Philippines.
  • Aim for a rabies-free Philippines by 2015 through vaccinations and education.
  • Ban the importation of elephants.
  • Ban the importation and exportation of dolphins.
