Hobbes and Landes Adoption Event – April 21st

On a bright and sunny April afternoon, CARA Welfare Philippines held its Adopt-A-Pet event in partnership with Hobbes and Landes.

The booth was set-up beside Hobbes and Landes on the Ground floor of Quadrant 2, Bonifacio High Street.

From 4PM to 7:30PM of the 21st of April, CARA members Karla, Cynthia, and Chiqui welcomed and entertained more than 70 visitors who came by.

Visitors came by and gave donations. There were quite a number of inquiries from the younger ones regarding volunteering. The little ones, were treated to a cookie decorating activity, courtesy of Ms Roxanne Arcilla. There were also Caloy and Sara coloring/activity sheets for the kids and the kids-at-heart.

Do consider adoption as the first option. One of the young visitors, a little girl, was heard telling her dad, “Let’s adopt, not buy!”

UP JMA Doggy Day Fair organizers also came by and donated Php 6,200 plus 48 cans of dog food for the rescued Laguna pit bulls

One of CARA’s rescued pets, Tiger, came with his new pet parent Mike. Wearing Peta.org’s Real men are Kind to Animals and Cara’s Adoption stickers, Mike and Tiger paraded around High Street and Serendra.

Yum Cha with CARA at Lili Restaurant

CARA Welfare Philippines in partnership with the Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila organized a dim sum feast fundraiser last April 14, 2012. This event was held in the hotel’s very own LiLi Restaurant.

Various media representatives such as Eunice Cruz (Clickthecity.com), Glen Duego (GMA-DZBB), JP Soriano (GMA-7), Alicia Herrera (Business World), Judith Junilla (High Life) and Charlene Bobis (Manila Bulletin) were present to help CARA in their mission to spread the word and raise animal welfare awareness.

The day started off with a talk about CARA’s mission given by Nancy Cu Unjieng (CARA President) which summarized what CARA’s mission. Guests were made aware of the current situation of the animals in the Philippines and the various ways in which they can help. Afterwards, a silent auction was held, all attendees were eager to place their bids on items dontated by CARA supporters – such as a dinner buffet, weekend hotel getaway, furniture, gift certificates, mobile phones, spa treatments and more.

The Yum Cha Fundraiser was a huge success with all seats sold out. Donations received and proceeds from this event will be contributed to the ongoing cost of CARA’s spay/neuter program at the CARA clinic and the mobilization of the educational curriculum in local schools and barangays.

A big thank you goes out to all who supported the event by attending, donating and spreading the word.

Help save the Laguna Pitbulls!

“I was so miserable and tired living my life fighting my own kind. Thank you for rescuing me . . . but please HELP ME AGAIN . . . give me a chance to live the remaining days of my life as MAN’S BEST FRIEND.”

Island Rescue Organizations (IRO) and CARA Welfare Philippines (Compassion And Responsibility for Animals), two major Animal Welfare Groups in the Philippines, made an unyielding agreement, after obtaining jurisdiction over the custody of the more than two hundred remaining Laguna Pit Bulls, to provide these dogs a second lease on life after their gruesome ordeal in the hands of a Korean dog-fighting syndicate. IRO and CARA are joined by individual Animal Welfare Advocates and the University of the Philippines Los Baños Veterinarians in accomplishing this enormous project.

The rescue and rehabilitation for the remaining Laguna Pit Bulls have just begun. The unified effort and the meager resources of the two Animal Welfare Groups and Animal Welfare Advocates are not enough to nurture all of the dogs back to health, provide them with their daily sustenance, including the construction and maintenance of their new shelter. IRO and CARA desperately need the support of the International Welfare Organizations and the Animal-Loving Community to help ensure the success of this noble project.

White Boy Adoption Update

Esther’s Adoption Story

I recently adopted a cat from CARA and I want to share my experience.

I’ve been thinking of adopting a cat for sometime now but nothing moved me until I came across this post:

‘FOR ADOPTION: Esther was not supposed to be rescued. She was only supposed to be part of CARA’s Trap Neuter and Return program. However, Ester was so loving and affectionate that the volunteer, who had her in her care while waiting for a free slot at the clinic, thought it would be a shame not to try to adopt her out instead of releasing her back onto the street. She really loves the company of humans. She follows us around the house and always keeps an eye on the whereabouts of the family members. She is around 6-7 months old and has already been spayed.”

In my mind this cat must be really special to connect with it’s human so deeply. All stray cats are survivors. They must be really strong and hardy to survive the streets of Manila. I had to see her.

It all happened quickly, in a few days. Esther is home with me. I adopted a stray/rescue cat because I do believe that this cats need home more so that those inbreed in the petshops.

Stray cats have stronger immune systems and that in the end you are really getting a good deal by:

1. Helping decrease the population of homeless cats

2. Adopting a cat that has been well taken cared of by a reputable foster parent (neutrered) and vaccinated

3. You are almost sure that getting a domestic cat ensures that this cat has survived the test of time, meaning in it’s genes it has eliminated the common genetically acquired diseases you often see in purebred.

CARA Adoption – February 25th, 2012

CARA held its first adoption event at Greenbelt 5 for the year 2012.On February 25, Saturday, a total of 22 cats were brought to the venue hoping to find that happy, loving, forever home.

The event started at 2pm. Cats most ready for adoption were chosen to attend the event. Among them were Bruce, Aero, Whiteboy, Snow, Sheeba, Rosemary, Abby, Vicco ,Mady, and Ling Ling.

3 dogs – Ginger, Pio and Snowy came to event around 4pm wearing new ‘Adopt Me’ scarves

There were a lot of people all throughout the event and we are grateful to the volunteers, drivers and handlers who helped transport, and oversee the safe handling of the cats to ensure that they were ok.

Happy to report, 11 cats were adopted! Another cat, Snow is under consideration as of this writing.
