A Filipino’s Best Friends: Aspins & Puspins

Written by Mica Tolentino

Here in the Philippines, you’ll find these charming companions just about anywhere — sunbathing on rooftops, keeping watch at doorsteps, playing with kids in the street, or casually trailing beside a stranger on their way to the sari-sari store. They are our asong Pinoy and pusang Pinoy, more lovingly known as Aspins and Puspins, and they’ve been part of everyday Filipino life for generations.

But beyond being familiar faces in our neighborhood streets, Aspins and Puspins have something truly special to offer that is uniquely and deeply Filipino: resilience, resourcefulness, and heart.

One-of-a-kind companions

Unlike purebred pets that follow a specific lineage, Aspins and Puspins come from a rich mix of local and mixed-breed backgrounds. Some Aspins can even trace their roots to indigenous dog breeds that have adapted over time to our climate, conditions, and way of life. You can see these traits in Puspins too, as they grow up navigating our rooftops and alleyways with the confidence of true street smarts.

Their mixed heritage gives them what’s called “hybrid vigor” — a term used to describe the enhanced health and strength that comes from genetic diversity, making them extra adaptable and resilient! Simply put: they’re tough, they’re strong, and are able to thrive well in the Philippine environment.

Aspins and Puspins are just as unique as their stories in look, personality, and spirit: all sorts of colors, patterns, ear shapes, and sizes, with coats that come in a beautiful range of colors from whites, browns, blacks, and the occasional ginger. You’ll spot their distinct markings and alert ears (sometimes floppy, sometimes upright). No two are ever quite alike — and that’s part of their charm!

But more than how they look, it’s who they are that makes them special. Aspins and Puspins are intelligent, loyal, intuitive, and naturally affectionate, malambing in their own quiet ways. Once they feel safe, they form deep, lasting bonds with their families and become lifelong best friends to their humans.

Truly, deeply Filipino

In many ways, Aspins and Puspins carry the same traits we value in ourselves as Filipinos:

    1. 💪 Matiyaga – They’re resilient and adaptable, able to adjust to all kinds of environments: whether they’re in the city or the province, an apartment or a spacious backyard. They take things as they come, always finding their rhythm in new environments and routines.
    2. 🤍 Mapagmahal – They’re affectionate and deeply loyal. Once they’ve found their people, they stay close and offer a special kind of friendship that grows with trust and time.
    3. 🧠 Madiskarte – They’re smart and observant, knowing how to figure things out wherever, whenever. From learning new routines to playful ways of asking for treats, their intelligence helps them make the most out of any situation or scenario!

So if you’re thinking of bringing a furry friend into your home, look no further than our very own Aspins and Puspins. Because sometimes, the best things aren’t far away… they could be the ones that have been here all along.

Loyal, loving, and deeply Filipino — our Aspins and Puspins have always been more than just animals on the street. Just as dogs are labelled “man’s best friend”, then truly, Aspins and Puspins are “Filipinos’ best friends”. 💙
