Adopt, Don’t Shop: A Second Chance Starts with You

Written by Railen Navalete

We all love animals in one way or another.

Whether it’s our dogs making sure we feel safe at home, or our cats making us laugh with their weird tricks, they’re more than just pets — they’re family.

You might remember being told as a child,

“Mahirap mag-alaga ng aso o pusa, malaking responsibilidad ’yan.”

But months later, you’d see your parents hugging the family dog, or baby-talking to the cat like it was their bunso and in many ways, they are.

Our pets bring us joy, warmth, and comfort in both our best and worst moments.

As much as we love the animals present in our lives, we must also remember the thousands of dogs and cats in shelters, pounds, and on the streets who are waiting, hoping, and too often, forgotten. They deserve love just as much as any dog or cat from a shop or special breeder.

They’ve known fear, hunger, and loneliness but still, they wait. Still, they hope.

Why Choose to Adopt?

  1. You’re saving a life and giving a second chance.
    • Every animal adopted from a shelter means one less life left behind. Many come from heartbreaking situations of abuse, neglect, abandonment. Adoption gives them a fresh start.

  2. You stand against unethical breeding and pet mills.
    • Choosing to adopt is a quiet protest against overbreeding and the cruelty found in many commercial breeding operations, where profit comes before welfare.

  3. You make space for others in need.
    • Each time you adopt, you not only help one animal — you open up space in the shelter for another rescue to be taken in and cared for.

  4. You gain a loyal, grateful companion.
    • You don’t only get a best friend but also a loyal one who’s going to stick with you forever. In return, they will love you and be grateful for the love you give them.

At CARA, we believe that every animal, no matter their past, deserves a future filled with love, safety, and dignity. There are still so many cats and dogs out there searching for someone to choose them and bring them home.

Be that someone. Adopt, don’t shop. Because love isn’t something you buy — It’s something you give.
