Be Their Voice: How to Act Against Animal Cruelty

Written by Chloe Champo

Several alarming incidents of animal cruelty, neglect, and abuse have recently made news headlines in our country. It is incredibly disheartening to see a world so cruel to living beings that are so pure of heart. When the voiceless are the ones suffering from cruelty, we must intervene and help them as much as possible.

These incidents urgently need the power of social media to elicit public vigilance, awareness and support, and to call for intervention from both the government and the private sector. The challenge, however, is ensuring that public clamor for change translates to concrete action through actual community involvement, as well as implementation of animal welfare laws and policies, when cruelty cases are reported to the proper authorities.

When you see animal cruelty, please intervene. These dear animals will need your help to stop offenders from hurting them.

Make sure to intervene! Loud calls for help and shouting “stop” will usually catch the attention of the offender and will cause them to flee. When they do, be sure to call a nearby veterinary doctor to assist you in caring for the victim-animal.

Never turn a blind eye. If you witness cases of animal cruelty, intervene through the proper legal channels.

How to File a Case Against Animal Offenders

  1. Immediately call the authorities.

If you witness instances of animal cruelty, please contact the barangay officials or local police immediately. They will be able to intervene appropriately and investigate the offender accordingly.

        2. Gather and prepare admissible evidence.

These include taking videos and photos, as well as gathering witnesses to build a strong case against the animal offender. Proper documentation is crucial in legal matters. Make sure to turn over this evidence to either the police, the barangay officials, or the attorney in charge of your case when needed.

        3. File a case with the assistance of:

    1. The Public Attorney’s Office

    2. Organizations like Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) or the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) or

    3. A private lawyer

Animals cannot speak for themselves, but you can. By standing up against cruelty and neglect, promptly reporting offenders, and supporting the enforcement of the law, we help build a safer and kinder world for all living beings sharing this world. Together, we can unite to foster a gentler world for animals.
