Stray animals like dogs and cats are labeled as “dirty” and “dangerous”, but behind every label is a cat or dog that’s trying their best to survive.
As each day passes, you’ve probably seen one, two, or more strays living around us – whether it’s a cat hiding underneath a car to seek shelter, a dog crossing the street with other people just to find food, or a kitten wandering around the streets looking for something to eat.
Each of these strays have their own story as to why they ended up living like this, but each one of them has one thing in common: they’re all just trying to survive.
When climate events happen, like thunderstorms or heatwaves, these animals have no homes or owners to return to, and no food or water. They are left to survive on leftover scraps from the streets or trash that has been thrown out.
Not to mention how some of them get abused because of the stigma surrounding them as “dirty” and “dangerous” but in reality, they’re just animals in survival mode with no intention of harming anyone.
It can be heartbreaking to witness this, and I’m sure you’ve thought of it before: “How can I help or support them?”
There are many simple ways you can support stray animals in your community. Here are some examples:
- Provide food and clean water. Even small acts, like leaving out a bowl of water during hot days or offering leftover rice mixed with a bit of meat, can make a big difference for a stray.
- Offer temporary shelter. Strays often look for safe places to hide from heavy rain or intense heat, so offering a box lined with cloth, or allowing them to rest in a shaded area, can already give them some comfort.
- Help them get proper medical care. If you have more resources, you can go a step further by bringing them to the nearest vet clinic for check-ups, deworming, or vaccinations. This not only improves their health, but also prevents the spread of diseases within the community.
- Supporting local animal welfare organizations like CARA and other organizations is also an important step. As a non-profit organization that relies heavily on donations and volunteers to rescue, feed, and rehome strays, we deeply appreciate every act of help Whether it’s through financial support, donating supplies, or giving your time, your contribution can go a long way.
- Most importantly, spreading awareness matters. Changing the way people see strays, and removing the stigma of them being “dirty” or “dangerous” can help create a safer environment where compassion is promoted instead of fear or cruelty.
At the end of the day, stray animals are not problems to be ignored, but lives that deserve compassion. Each small act of kindness, whether it’s giving them food, shelter, medical help, or simply refusing to see them as “dirty” and “dangerous”, contributes to a world where they no longer have to fight so hard just to survive.
“Helping strays is not only an act of compassion, it’s an investment in healthier, safer, and kinder communities.”
