CARA Philippines Receives Battersea Grant, Expands Adoption Drive

June 20, 2020—Despite challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic, nonprofit animal welfare organization CARA (Compassion and Responsibility for Animals) Welfare Philippines is upping its adoption drive efforts through a recently awarded special grant from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in London, one of the United Kingdom’s leading animal welfare charities.

The funds granted by Battersea, which ranges anywhere from £3,000 to £15,000 (around P180,000 to P900,000), will support CARA’s work with cats and dogs, particularly:

  • the improvement of the group’s clinic facility in Mandaluyong City;
  • the revamp of its official website www.caraphil.org;
  • the strengthening of its Humane Education program for kids, which cultivates in them kindness toward animals;
  • the continual spaying and neutering of their animal beneficiaries, under its Trap-Neuter-Return program, in areas such as Dasmariñas, Forbes Park, Bel-Air and San Lorenzo villages in Makati, Makati Polo Club, and Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City; and
  • the expansion of its adoption drive under the “Adopt a Cat from Kath” program, supported by the group’s brand ambassador, actor Kathryn Bernardo.

Gem Faisan, project head for the Battersea Program and a member of the CARA’s board of trustees, says they are especially focused on securing homes for cats and dogs in need, as this would be a more sustainable solution for them, rather than having them live in a shelter.

“If you simply coop animals up in a shelter, you run the risk of failing to care for them properly–because the more animals you accommodate, the more your resources are stretched,” said Faisan. “Even a human household with many residents would experience the same thing.”

The Battersea Grants initiative was established early 2019 with the aim of supporting smaller rescues and shelters around the world. According to  Margaret Hulme, Grants Manager at Battersea: “We hope that this grant will helpmake a real difference to the lives of animals. At Battersea, we want to support rescues and shelters, not only by awarding funding, but also by sharing the experiences and knowledge we have gained as an animal welfare charity that has been rescuing and rehoming animals

for 160 years.”
