CNVR: Saving strays from mass euthanasia

Written by Chloe Marie Champo

Every year, thousands of stray cats and dogs are lined up by local authorities and pounds to face mass euthanasia. While they claim that it is done in the name of population control, we can all agree that killing animals does not solve the problem—in fact, it perpetuates it.

At CARA, we aim to address this issue in a more effective way—one that is humane, efficient, and sustainable: the CNVR (Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate for rabies, Return) method. To understand this better, we have laid out different points:

Mass euthanasia does not solve overpopulation. While euthanizing animals creates a temporary dip in the stray population of a specific community, it does not permanently stop the breeding cycle. As long as there are at least two unsterilized animals in the area, they will continue to reproduce, and new strays will move into the space. It creates a never-ending cycle. CNVR tackles the root cause. By catching, neutering, vaccinating, and returning stray animals to their communities, CNVR effectively stops the breeding cycle. Over time, this leads to communities having a controlled and declining population without resorting to inhumane practices.

Mass euthanasia erodes public trust. Humans are compassionate and aware, and many would agree that mass euthanasia is a cruel, outdated, and inhumane practice done against voiceless animals. When local governments resort to such practices, they lose the support and trust of the citizens they serve. CNVR builds compassionate communities. CNVR programs are done by organizations backed by volunteers, animal lovers, and residents that create loving and long-term solutions.

Our Path Forward

At CARA, we do not believe in cruel shortcuts and quick band-aid fixes. We prefer compassion, science-backed research, and community-driven solutions. We see every stray cat and dog as a life just as worthy as any other. Their existence is not a problem, but this current cycle of cruelty is.

You can help too! Support CARA’s CNVR program and other organizations that also offer these services. Spread the word and educate other people to do the same. Together, hand in hand, we can end this cynical cycle and create a kinder world for our furry friends!
