The sweet second life of Choco and Mucho

Choco and Mucho came to my life at the right time. I was having a crisis then. I’ve been donating money to shelters and rescuers I see on Facebook here and there. But I knew it wasn’t enough. I knew I was more capable.

So, when my sister-in-law told me they found abandoned puppies along Ayala Avenue, I dropped everything, dug an old metal cage from the bodega, and made a bed out of towels and little plush toys.

Choco and Mucho arrived in a paper bag–a pair of chocolate brown puppies with shaky legs and barely opened eyes. I could hear them whimper as they crawled out of the bag. I scooped them up, the familiar coffee-like scent brought back the happy memories of the many puppies I’ve held in my arms.

Every day, I fed them using a dropper until I had to switch to feeding bottles so I could keep up with the little boys’ big appetite. I looked forward to feeding (and cuddling) time early in the morning and when I get home at night. These quiet moments I spent with Choco and Mucho relieved me from a lot of stress I was under in at work. As I comforted them, they also comforted me.

They were with us just long enough to see them walk without falling down. In a matter of days, we found a family that would become their forever home.

This family recently lost one of their beloved old dogs and was looking for a new puppy to adopt and take care of. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. I couldn’t think of a better family than a dear friend’s.

On a Wednesday night, Choco and Mucho were picked up by my friend’s brother who traveled all the way from Cavite and back. They were welcomed by an excited mother who would later on peep regularly out the window to call the puppies: “My boys!”.

Six months later, Choco and Mucho are now much taller and with much bigger appetite but they continue to be the baby boys of the family, keeping their mom and dad company, and getting their bellies rubbed and their fur brushed as much as they want.

Because of Choco and Mucho, I realized how deciding to do what’s right can forever change not just a dog’s life but as well as the people whose hearts they touched. Because of them, I am trying to do more to help than merely sharing photos and stories of abused and abandoned animals in my Facebook feed. After all, loving requires more than just a click.
